Mufti Muhammad Hassan (RA) Founder of Jamia Ashrafia
Born In:

1880 AD / 1297 H At village: Milpur about 7 miles from the historical city of HASSAN ABDAL.

Father’s Name:

Maulana Allah Dad bin Muhammad Afzal Maulana Allah Dad was a reputed ‘Aalim-e-Deen Muhaddith, and acknowledged spiritual guide of the people around.

Initial Education:

Mufti Muhammad Hassan (RA) was therefore brought up in an extremely pious environment of practicing Muslim scholars. Having learnt the fundamentals of the Holy Qur’an & Ahadith from his own father, Mufti Sb had further formal education in Ahadith and Islamic logic & philosophy from other scholars of repute like Qazi Gohar Din Ghodhwi of Distt. Campbelpur, Maulana Muhammad Ma’soom of Malakand & Maulana Abdul Jabbar Ghaznawi. 

Higher Education:

On migration to Amritsar Maulana Muhammad Ma’soom brought Mufti Muhammad Hassan (RA) alongwith him to Madrasa Ghaznawiyya, where Mufti Sahib completed the final Daura Hadith of Dars-e-Nizami.

Spiritual Attachment with Maulana Thanwi (RA):

Right through the period of studies Mufti Muhammad Hassan (RA) had been a practicing scholar, and he felt in himself a deep desire to be accepted by Maulana Muhammad Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) as his disciple. To fulfill this desire Mufti Muhammad Hassan (RA) accomplished the following conditions as laid down by Hadrat Thanwi (RA). (a) Mufti Sb attained more perfection in Tajweed from Ustadul Qurra Qari Karim Bakhsh (RA). (b) Complete Daura Hadith from Imamul Asr Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri at Darul Uloom Deoband. As a consequent of fulfillment of the above pre-requisites Hadhrat-e-Thanwi (RA) accepted Mufti Muhammad Hassan under his folds of Bait in 1343 H; and soon after, in deep appreciation of Mufti Sb’s devotion to Allah (JJ) & His Prophet (SAWS), Hadhrat Thanwi (RA), granted him the most elevated status of Khalifa Majaz-e-Bait.

Teaching Assignment:

During his stay at Amritsar, Mufti Sb remained associated with Madrassa Naumia for over 35 years, initially as a Mudarris and then as Chief Mudarris. On account of his piety & self devotion to the course of Islamic Learning Mufti Sb. earned a place of great respect & regards among his pupils & the general public alike.

Migration to Pakistan & Establishment of Jamia Ashrafia:

Being an extremely faithful deciple of Maulana Thanwi (RA) Mufti Sb migrated to Pakistan immediately after independence and settled in Lahore, where he established JAMIA ASHRAFIA in September 1947 for continuation of his mission of propagation of beacon of Islamic Knowledge to earn Allah’s goodwill in fulfillment of the Holy Prophet (SAWS) saying, “Best amongst you are those who study the Holy Quran and teach it”. Having been founded with sincere intentions to serve the cause of Islamic Learning, the building at Nila Gumbad soon fell too small to fulfill the accommodation & teaching requirements of a large number of students teaching admission at the JAMIA. A bigger campus of 120 Kanals was therefore purchased on Ferozepur Road in March 1955, and after construction of a the Masjid Hassan, the Academic Block, a Boarding House and a few residences of the staff, the pupils & staff of the JAMIA shifted to the new campus in 1958.

Demise of Mufti Muhammad Hassan (RA):

As destined, after establishment of the JAMIA on sound footings Maulana Mufti Muhammad Hassan (RA) breathed his last on 1st June 1961. Inna Lillahe wa Inna Elaihey Rajeoon May the noble soul rest in peace in Heaven. After demise of the noble Founder of the JAMIA, his eldest son Mufti Mohammad Obaidullah (MZ) was unanimously nominated to take up the arduous responsibility of Raisul Jamia.
